There are wide range of possible causes. As well as conditions related to inflammatory gum disease, such as periodontal disease, there are also other reasons why gums can start to recede which have nothing to do with bacteria. Pressing too hard when you are cleaning your teeth, grinding your teeth, or even a genetic predisposition may also lead to receding gums. Come and see us! We will establish the reason and find a solution to your problem!

Painful or swollen gums and gums that bleed when you clean your teeth are generally an indication of gingivitis. This is an inflammation of the gums that is caused by bacteria and the build-up of plaque or tartar on the teeth. If the gingivitis is only superficial, it can be successfully treated by means of a professional dental clean. This will include thorough cleaning of the gum pockets and interdental spaces so that all the bacteria and deposits in these areas are removed. If you have a professional dental clean regularly, you should find that the bacteria that lead to inflammation – which then cause gum problems – never actually get a chance to get a foothold.

Treating periodontitis

  • Periodontal treatment

Advanced gum inflammation can lead to the gums receding and sometimes even the jawbone can be affected. In such cases, we use the term periodontal disease. If it is not treated, periodontal disease can lead to teeth becoming unstable, starting to wobble and in the worst case falling out. If there are indications of periodontal disease, it is important that an appropriate treatment programme is initiated as soon as possible. We would be happy to help you to take immediate and effective action to counter this problem. The first step is to have a professional dental clean which will involve careful cleaning of the teeth, the interdental spaces and also the gum pockets. This is followed by treatment for the periodontal disease which is carried out by the dentist. With the help of special techniques and highly advanced instruments, all remaining traces of tartar, plaque and bacteria are completely removed. The gums are now perfectly prepared for a successful healing process. In some cases, it may be advisable to support the healing process with a course of antibiotics.
  • Bone regeneration after treatment for periodontal disease

In severe cases of periodontal disease the jawbone may also be affected and start to gradually recede. In such cases, following successful treatment to remove the causes of the inflammation, it will then be necessary for the bone to be regenerated. Teeth that have started to wobble due to the shrinking away of the bone will then be given a better hold again. Our specialists can also help you with bone regeneration using effective, yet gentle methods which will soon make it possible for you to have a firm bite again.
